Assessment
A comprehensive AAC assessment includes case history, caregiver questionnaire, informal, and formal measures all designed to find the right technology fit for the individual. The whole person and their circle of support is considered in dynamic assessment. We work within a feature-matching process framework that considers sensory/motor status, language level, symbol type, portability, and others. In line with best practice, our specialists consider at least 3 systems during the assessment process. An assessment typically takes 3 to 5 hours and includes a formal report that can be used for school or insurance funding. If the team elects to pursue funding of the selected AAC system through insurance, we assist with the necessary paperwork. No matter the funding source, we will help your family navigate the process from start to finish.
Trials
Once potential technology is identified, we facilitate a loan with the recommended AAC system. During the trial period, an AAC specialist travels to your home and/or agreed upon community settings to provide support and individualized training with the loaned system. At the conclusion of the trial period, Technology Voices works with your family and involved professionals to make a team decision related to the selected AAC system. Formal trial periods typically last between 4 and 8 weeks.
home and community-based training & Therapy
We believe in working in naturalistic environments, such as at home and in the community, in order to maximize success. Sessions can be at the grocery store, library, playground, restaurant, mall, movie theatre, or other mutually agreed upon location. Training and therapy sessions are typically about 1 hour in length and caregiver participation is key. We work on a coaching model and teach caregivers how to create communication opportunities, follow a prompt hierarchy, and provide evidence-based implementation throughout the day.
PROGRAMMING, TECHNICAL SUPPORT, REPAIR DOCUMENTATION
Programming the device with individualized vocabulary and pages for a variety of environments is essential to ongoing success with an AAC system. We provide initial and ongoing programming and technical support, as needed, on a variety of systems. We can also provide programming and technical support via teleconference, if desired and appropriate. We can also help if AAC users require documentation for repair of an insurance-funded device.
tRAINING FOR PROFESSIONALS
We prioritize collaboration with other professionals, in order to improve the success of AAC intervention. We provide training to SLPs who wish to enhance their AAC skills. We also provide training to other professionals who work with AAC users, including physical and occupational therapists, behavior specialists, FloorTime therapists, and others. Sessions include training on programming and implementation techniques, as well as development of ongoing goals that incorporate AAC use. Trainings for professionals are typically 1 to 2 hours in length.
consultation
Already an AAC user, but the system is not meeting individual needs? Technology Voices provides consultation services aimed at problem-solving current AAC systems, as well as identifying whether a re-evaluation may be warranted. Through consultation, we aim to prevent device abandonment and other complications related to AAC use. Consultations generally last 1 to 1.5 hours and can be conducted via phone, teleconference or in-person.
